FDA tells bakery: Love is not an ingredient

The Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to MA company Nashoba Brook Bakery on September 22, rebuking them for, amongst other things, including "love" on the ingredient list for the company's granola. In the note, the FDA questions why love was listed among other (real) ingredients, such as oats and sugar.

"'Love' is not a common or usual name of an ingredient".

Nashoba Chief Executive Officer John Gates described the FDA's message as "so George Orwell" and told Bloomberg he was proud to include "love" as an ingredient in the company's products. But he also said the company has gotten a positive reaction from people since news of the letter began to circulate. He says it's tapped into a feeling a lot of Americans have that the government can overreach, adding that it seems silly.

"People ask us what makes it so good". The subject of almost every rock-and-roll song, the thing Romeo and Juliet died for, was supposedly in the granola, which was sold at around 120 stores around New England. As the Concord bakery's Twitter account shows, the business has a sense of humor.

Watch out, Nanna - according to the FDA, that chicken soup was definitely not made with "love".

Besides citing the bakery for mislabeling in their ingredients, the FDA noted numerous other code violations in their letter, including a single, unspecified one-inch-long "crawling insect" in the pastry area.

Nashoba sells products it makes in close to 120 stores, with most of the stores in MA and New Hampshire, says its website.

The ostensible mislabeling of products was "not among the agency's top concerns", the FDA clarified, according to Bloomberg.

"I really like that we list "love" in the granola", the bakery's CEO groused to Bloomberg.

A MA bakery's granola may be made with love, but federal officials say it shouldn't be listed as an ingredient on the package.
