Sri Lanka hands Pakistan first test series defeat in UAE

Thirteen months after lifting the prestigious ICC Test Championship mace for topping the ICC Test Team Rankings Pakistan have plummeted to seventh in the latest Test team rankings, which were updated following the conclusion of its home series against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, who had not won an away series against Pakistan since 2000, won the first Test in Abu Dhabi by 21 runs.

Chasing 317 to win, Asad Shafiq scored a valiant 112 before Pakistan were bowled out for 248 inside the first session on day five.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed admitted that he made many mistakes during his first Test series as captain, but seemed determined not to repeat them in future after suffering first series defeat at Pakistan's adopted home of United Arab Emirates (UAE) in seven years.

"The boys executed the game plan really well in this series. We knew Dilruwan and Rangana (Herath) would do the job". Sri Lanka's confidence was down after losing every match during a visit by India recently, followed by a first five-match series loss to Zimbabwe in one-day internationals.

Pakistan had looked to the overnight partnership of Shafiq and Ahmed to guide them to the winning target after resuming at 198/5, needing another 119 for victory.

Ahmed survived a stumping on 65, and in the same over, Shafiq reached his 11th century, off 151 balls.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, like head coach Mickey Arthur, maintained that it was not the bowling that lost Pakistan the series, but the batting.

The sides play a five-match one-day series starting on Friday, before contesting three Twenty20s, the last of which will take place in Lahore, subject to security.
