Apple reportedly working with LG on a foldable phone for 2020

Apple teams up with LG Display for foldable iPhone

Apple has been rumored to be working closely with LG Display for a foldable iPhone but it has been reported that the California-based giant is going to keep out Samsung from the entire project.

This could be the sole reason for which Apple has made a decision to work with LG Display- a display solutions arm of LG on a new product. Meanwhile reports out of Korea also state that LG Innotek is creating flexible circuit boards to go with these displays.

The foldable iPhone will most likely become reality only in 2020. However, it's been suggested that Tim Cook and co do not want to develop too close a relationship with an arch rival. If that's true, it could mean that Apple's foldable iPhone won't be out until after Samsung releases its first foldable smartphone, which is supposedly slated for release next year. LG reportedly completed its own foldable OLED panel prototype two to three years ago and has been upgrading the durability and the yield rate.

Apple is said to be speeding up the production process of the folding screens by investing in the construction of a new LG Display manufacturing facility, called E6. However, the report also says that the foldable display panel production for iPhones could start by early 2019.

Beyond the rumored production date, no other hints about Apple's foldable smartphone have surfaced. The tech major is reportedly collaborating with LG Display on a foldable handset.

According to The Korea Herald, Apple usually starts working on a new phone one year before its launch, and suppliers start receiving the device's key features and details about its panel during that year.

Apple Inc (Apple) designs, manufactures and markets mobile communication and media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players, and a variety of related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications. Apple accounts for about 1.3% of Moon Capital Management LLC's investment portfolio, making the stock its 21st biggest holding. On the other hand, Samsung is already ahead in the foldable phone race.
