The Russian former world No. 1 defeated Magda Linette of Poland 7-5, 6-3 and will play Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele.

On Thursday, world No. 6 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki chose to drop out of the Hong Kong Tennis Open because of an elbow injury.

Ranked world No. 64, Osaka began to dictate terms in the second set, racing to a 5-0 lead.

The Dane saw the doctor only minutes before she pulled the plug on her evening showcase match-up.

"I want to apologize to everyone who came out today to watch this match", said an emotional Wozniacki, who won the title on the same court 12 months ago. "I felt like as the match went on I kept getting better and better".

Svitolina failed to recover from a right leg injury to start her match against world No 114 American Nicole Gibbs.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens cried off with an injury after losing in the first round in both Wuhan and Beijing, her only appearances since her Flushing Meadows triumph.

Last year's victor, Caroline Wozniacki, is in action after 7pm on centre court tonight, and all eyes will be on the world number six, the top ranked player left in the tournament, as she looks for a second WTA title this season.

France's Kristina Mladenovic and the UK's Johanna Konta also pulled out in the days leading up to the event.

Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka fought back from an early break to stun Venus Williams in straight sets and move through to the Hong Kong Open quarter-finals yesterday.

In the quarter-finals, Osaka will meet Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who had beaten Jacqueline Cako 7-6 (7/3), 6-1.

Big-hitting American Brady, ranked 70, easily overcame an out-of-sorts local crowd favourite Zhang 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour.
