Firefighters: Burned woman said 'Eric' set her on fire

Panola County District Attorney John Champion left walks past Quinton Tellis 29 who is charged with burning 19-year-old Jessica Chambers to death almost three years ago as Tellis sits in a Batesville Miss. courtroom waiting for his trial to begin

The murder trial in the death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers is underway in MS; three years after her death, the final moments of her life are still vivid to the first responders who were with her.

Prosecutors say Quinton Tellis set Jessica Chambers' auto on fire near a tree farm in Courtland, Mississippi, on December 6, 2014. A passing motorist saw Chambers walking down the road and called 911.

Tellis has pleaded not guilty to murdering Chambers, and several firefighters testified Wednesday that the woman said someone named Eric set her on fire when they found her, severely burned and barely able to speak.

There was no chance Jessica Chambers could survive her injuries when she was airlifted to a hospital with second and third-degree burns covering 93 percent of her body, a nurse testified Thursday.

Defense Attorney Darla Palmer contends that Chambers' statement shows Tellis is falsely accused in the case.

When Haley and two other firefighters found Chambers, she was in the middle of the road, wearing only her underwear. He said the first thing he did was grab a blanket to "conceal her".

Citing statements Tellis made to investigators, prosecutor John Champion said in his opening statement that Tellis and Chambers had sex in her auto the evening she was found burned.

Prosecutor John Champion said that Tellis had repeatedly asked Chambers for sex, and she had told him no. Mills said he knew Chambers, but did not recognize her at first. They claim that the pair had sex in the front seat of the victim's vehicle and then Tellis set her on fire. Champion said he believes Tellis suffocated Chambers and thought he had killed her. The trial has been emotional, with witnesses breaking down on the stand and spectators crying when jurors were shown graphic photos of Chambers' burned stomach and face. "I can't picture it for y'all". "Every time you tried to give her air, it just wouldn't go". Her hair was fried like it had been stuck in a light socket.

Tellis, 29, faces life in prison without parole if convicted.
