Five Grundy County Football Players Charged with Attempted Aggravated Rape-Coach Suspended

The Sheriff's Office says five students have been charged with attempted aggravated rape.

WSMV television station 4 today reports that the district attorney general who represents Grundy County expects charges to be filed today against at least four male football players in connection with an alleged hazing incident inside the high school's field house in Coalmont on Wednesday morning. All three were found guilty in August 2016.

The Grundy County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation surrounding the alleged hazing event that occurred Wednesday morning at Grundy County High School.

The five students charged in the incident have been placed on house arrest with Global Positioning System monitors.

Sheriff Shrum said the other two football players were not in the room at the time.

"We specifically asked this question to every one of them: 'Did you have to go through the same thing?' And every one of them said no", Shrum said.

"I don't know that they were remorseful", he said. Assistant coach Greg Brewer has been named the interim coach.

In addition, Grundy County head football coach Casey Tate has been suspended from coaching duties, according to director of schools Jessie Kinsey.

Tate, a 1998 GCHS graduate and former lineman for the Yellow Jackets, was hired as the varsity head football coach in 2015 after serving as an assistant coach from 2011-2013 and middle school coach in 2014. Assistant Coach, Greg Brewer will assume the role of head coach of the football team during this suspension.

Shrum said he does not believe the students had permission to be in the field house as early as they were to work out alone.

Kinsey added that the students will be punished according to the school handbook.

Sheriff Clint Shrum says investigators spent the afternoon interviewing students, teachers and parents to determine what happened.

The Department of Children's Services is also investigating.

The Grundy County Sheriff's Office turned its findings over to the district attorney's office, which ultimately chose to not charge any of the students involved with a crime.

The emergency meeting will be at Grundy County High School on Monday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m.
