Hackers accessed visitors' credit card info from 41 hotels in 11 countries

Hyatt Hotels Suffers International Payment Card Data Breach

Hotel giant Hyatt is warning its customers around the world that their payment data may have been compromised in another breach at the company, its second in two years.

"I want to assure you that there is no indication that information beyond that gained from payment cards - cardholder name, card number, expiration date and internal verification code - was involved, and as a result of implemented measures created to prevent this from happening in the future, guests can feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide".

The new statement reads: "we have resolved the issue and implemented additional security measures to strengthen the security of our systems".

It was the latest significant hack to target the hotel chain since its last data breach in December 2015.

The largest number of Hyatt properties impacted were based in China with 18 hotels and Mexico with 4 hotels.

Hyatt announced today that its payment systems were breached, exposing credit card data from 41 hotels in 11 countries.

He has added that there is now no indication that any other information was affected in the breach.

The hotel chain did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how its "enhanced cybersecurity and additional layers of defense" left the breach unspotted for more than three months. Back then, Chuck offered similar platitudes to affected customers. So even they don't know exactly what the extent of the breach is, apparently. It has advised customers to review their account statements.

In January a year ago Hyatt announced that 250 hotel locations in 50 countries were affected by a payment card breach that occurred between August and December 2015.

How organizations that suffer a POS intrusion learn they have been breached, 2010 to 2016. The hack was discovered in July and the investigation only just recently concluded.

"I want to assure you that there is no indication that information beyond that gained from payment cards ... was involved, and as a result of implemented measures created to prevent this from happening in the future, guests can feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide", said Chuck Floyd, Hyatt Hotels Corporation's global president of operations said in the message to customers. About one-third of POS intrusions resulted from attackers using brute-force attacks to guess usernames and passwords to gain access to the environment. In 95 percent of the attacks studied by Verizon, POS malware scraped data from running memory, meaning it could intercept card data before it might have been encrypted and stored.

"As a result of implemented measures created to prevent this from happening in the future, guests can feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide", he said in the new statement this week.
