A key political ally of the ruling pro-independence coalition in Catalonia has urged regional president Carles Puigdemont to push ahead with a declaration of independence from Spain. The move disappointed some of the hard-liners in the secessionist camp.

After consideration, it was decided not to respond to the request of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Spain's deputy prime minister says Catalonia faces an "economic recession" if the secession standoff continues in the northeastern region.

On Tuesday, Carles Puigdemont pulled the region back from a showdown with the Madrid government by proposing to delay the effects of a unilateral independence declaration following the controversial referendum earlier this month.

If he refuses to, or does not answer, Mr Rajoy has threatened to trigger for the first time a constitutional article that could give central authorities power to intervene directly in Catalonia.

The far-left separatist Catalan party CUP said in a letter dated Friday that Puigdemont should ignore the Spanish government's warning, lift the suspension and definitively proclaim independence.

The Catalan government has not given any signal of what it intends to do.

In a widely-anticipated speech this Tuesday, Catalan president Puigdemont had told the regional parliament that the people of Catalonia had won the right to independence following the referendum vote on October 1 where nearly 90% of voters had backed independence from Spain. Opponents boycotted the vote.
