Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday accused the Modi government of rushing through the Goods and Services Tax (GST) because of which, he said, people were facing a lot of problems.

Akhilesh Yadav, 44, touched the feet of his 77-year-old father, who is the SP patron.

For the first time in nearly a year, Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son and party chief Akhilesh Yadav were seen together in public at a party event on Thursday.

The occasion was the 50th death anniversary of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia, who is described by the SP as the "guiding light" of the party that Akhilesh Yadav has been leading since January this year, consigning his father to a mentorship role. After paying floral tributes together at Lohia's statue, the father-son chatted amid slogan shouting by party workers.

Akhilesh further stated that Till now His father (Mulayam Singh Yadav) took forward the socialist movement, now it is his responsibility to take it forward.

Mr Shivpal Yadav, meanwhile, offered tributes to Dr Lohia at the Lohia Trust office, of which he is now the secretary.

"If a father glosses over his son's mistakes, the child may lose way", the former Uttar Chief Minister told reporters. "Pariwar ek tha, ek hai aur ek rahega (The family was together and will always remain united)", he said in response to a media query on whether differences within the Yadav clan had been resolved. Before the Agra convention too, Akhilesh Yadav had met Mulayam Singh Yadav to invite him. He however did not elaborate as to who were the people who were trying to misguide Mulayam Singh. The back-to-back meetings between the father and son kindled hopes of party workers of a reconciliation between them. Shivpal Yadav had also congratulated his nephew after his re-election as party chief on Twitter. It was the very public spat between Mr Akhilesh Yadav and Mr Shivpal Yadav in the past one year that had caused an nearly vertical split in the party with Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav throwing his weight behind his brother. He predicted good results for the Samajwadi Party in the next Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
