Pakistan violates ceasefire in J&K's Poonch, third provocation in 24 hours

Speaking to ANI, Singh said, "The Pakistan Army had retaliated first which followed a blast soon after that".

On October 6, Pakistan troops had opened fire in Baba Khori and other areas in Rajouri district.

"The Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars from 07:45am in the Krishnaghati (KG) sector along the Line of Control (LoC) today", a defence spokesman said on the ceasefire violation. Following the heavy shelling by the Pakistani side, the schools in Digwar sector have been asked to remain shut.

An Army jawan was killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistani forces along the LoC in Poonch on October 3 and on October 2, while two minors were killed and 12 civilians were injured in cross-border shelling. Till August 1, there were 285 such violations by the Pakistan Army, while in 2016, the number was significantly less at 228 for the entire year, according to the Army figures.

These back to back violations by the Pakistani Army near the residential area by the LoC, has forced the residents to flee the area and move to places far from border to save their lives.

Sepoy TK Reddy and defence porter Mohammed Zahier were grievously injured during the exchange of fire and succumbed to their injuries later, a defence spokesperson said. Mohd Zahier aged 22 belonged to Village Kalali, Tehsil Manjakote, District Rajouri, J&K.

The spokesperson said Reddy was a courageous and sincere soldier and Zahir was an honest and dedicated worker.

The shelling was carried out at intermittent intervals till afternoon, they added.

Reddy's body was being brought to Jammu in a helicopter and shall be flown in a fixed wing aircraft to Delhi after a wreath-laying ceremony in the winter capital of the restive state.
