Prince Harry Shares How Princess Diana Fought Homophobia At 25 Years Old

Prince Harry

Prince Harry touched many hearts, just like his mother did, while giving a speech at the Virgin Holidays Attitude Awards, on Thursday night.

Princess Diana was posthumously awarded the Attitude Legacy Award, presented in the 20th anniversary year of her death. She was still finding her way in public life, but she already felt a responsibility to shine her spotlight on the people and issues that were often ignored.

Harry (below) said: 'I believe that she would be telling everyone across society - not just those most at risk - that with effective treatment being free and available in the United Kingdom, that we must all embrace regular testing - both for our own sake and for those that we love.

In the summer, Princes Diana's brother, Charles, 9 Earl Spencer said that the late princess wasn't really a "gloves person" because she believed in the importance of "human contact".

The posthumous award recognises the significance of the work Diana, Princess of Wales did, in challenging the stigma and fear that surrounded HIV and Aids in the 1980s and 1990s.

Harry said she understood the disease created a risky situation "when mixed with homophobia".

"In the year before my mother's death, the first truly effective anti-retroviral treatments were developed for HIV and Aids".

He added that the moment she shook hands with an AIDS patient seemed to "break down a million barriers overnight with that one simple act".

According to People, Prince Harry has also continued his mom's legacy by asking everyone to get tested. "But she sure as hell would be proud of me, hopefully, that I'm doing it".

Last year, Prince William appeared on the cover of Attitude magazine, who held the awards tonight, speaking out against homophobia, bullying and prejudice. Instead, he explains that he feels it's important to talk about the issue as a straight man in order to erase the stigma that HIV is a "gay disease".

"If you speak to someone who's suffering from [AIDS], of course it's terrifying because it can kill you, but the point I'm trying to make is, if you can't even say the word without cringing or worrying or freaking out about it, how the hell are we going to help everybody and solve this problem before it gets too big?"
