'Roswell' Series Reboot in Development at CW

The WB UPN

The original Roswell series debuted on the WB network in 1999 before moving to UPN for its third and final season. Part science fiction and part teen romance, the books told the story of several aliens living as human teenagers, and the humans they both fell in love with and befriended, all the while trying to evade evil aliens and humans who were looking for the extraterrestrial teens.

The series started off similarly to the books, with the alien Max using his ability to manipulate matter to save the life of his classmate Liz after she is shot.

The original sci-fi drama, which helped launch the careers of stars like Katherine Heigl and Colin Hanks, departed our galaxy back in 2002 after three seasons. We don't know if Heigl, Hanks, or any of the original cast members will be returning for the new Roswell, though we're guessing they won't have much trouble finding a committed fan base. But the vague description of the reboot series may actually allow some, if not all, of the mythology from the first series to still be in play for this show.

Now there's a chance that "Roswell" will rise from the ashes again. It's heading to the CW with a new script from Carina MacKenzie, producer of Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals.

Here's a summary of the plot: the show follows the daughter of undocumented immigrants who reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. She discovers something entirely unexpected about the boy she crushed on as a teenager: he's actually an alien posing as a human, and he is now working as a police officer.

Two of the biggest changes to the series are already known.

It's clear that the different interpretations of what it means to be an "alien" will be an important theme; the fact that the main character reconnects with her teenage crush means that maybe we'll get some Roswell High flashbacks, too.
