Slave Labor: Louisiana Sheriff Laments Release Of 'Good' Prisoners

Steve Prator went on epic rant against the new criminal justice reforms as he complains it will release many ¿good behavior¿ prisoners who he argues are needed for everyday work in jail

He said these particular prisoners were capable of labor work that more violent and risky prisoners were less competent at.

According to KSLA, Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator is livid about these criminal justice reform laws and went on a tirade complaining that they are putting innocent people at risk. "Here he [Prator] says how upset he is that new programs are releasing the "good" black men from jail who wash his vehicle, mow the yards, and cook in the kitchen", King wrote in a Facebook post.

"In addition to the bad ones. they're releasing some good ones that we use every day to wash cars, to change oil in the cars, to cook in the kitchen, to do all that where we save money", he continued.

"The [prisoners] that you can work, the ones that can pick up trash, the work-release programs-but guess what?"

A Louisiana sheriff is voicing his opposition to criminal justice reform laws due to go into effect next month.

"There's ways and things that need to be reformed on the criminal justice system, but certainly we don't need to do what we're about to do", said Prator. He is concerned, it would seem, about saving money, but only in the form of cheap or free labor.

It's nearly as if he forgets that he's talking about human beings - like he's speaking about animals or cattle.

But Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Correction Secretary James Le Blanc told the news station that what Prator said just isn't true.

"I don't want state prisoners", Prator said.

The controversy comes as a state with a notoriously large incarcerated population begins to implement a series of prison reforms.

Prator, like many Louisiana sheriffs, has opposed the reforms from the start. "There needs to be more done before this law takes effect", Prator said. "It reeks of the issue of slavery", Angel Harris, an assistant counsel for the NAACP fund, told the Times.

Though it is not atypical for prisoners to do menial work for very low pay around the country, Mauer said he was shocked by sheriff's comments. "You think about the demographics of who is he actually talking about".

In a statement from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick doubled down on the sheriff's statements while criticizing Intercept reporter Shaun King for tweeting that Prator "likes keeping "good" Black men in jail". There is work that other inmates do that is part of enrollment in a reentry program.

Prator made his comments about these state prison "benefits" during an October 5 press conference addressing the Louisiana Justice Reinvestment Package, 10 bills that go into effect on November 1 that will grant thousands of eligible inmates early release across the state. Blacks, who make up 32 percent of the state, outnumber whites in prison by a ratio of at least two to one.

Back in June the state passed 10 bills as an effort to change Louisiana's terrible reputation as the most imprisoned state in the country.

"The sheriff is incorrect in his assessment of the Justice Reinvestment Package", Edwards said in a statement to HuffPost.
