Pakistan FM appears before accountability court

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar's assets were frozen in and out of Pakistan

The bank transaction details provided by the witness were made part of case record by the court, the report said. He told the court that a Current Account was opened on Ishaq Dar's name on March 25, 2005 and he has handed over 12-year bank statement of Dar's account to NAB.

During the cross-examination, a heated war of words ensued between Harris and NAB prosecutor Imran Shafiq, with the former taunting the latter for reportedly influencing the witness.

Masood Ghani, the operations manager in a private bank, will give his testimony later in the day. He was also cross-examined by the defnse counsel. He further stated that he submitted the requisite record to NAB's investigating officer, concerning Dar. The court adjourned the hearing till October 30 and asked the second witness to appear with the original documents.

On last hearing, Judge Muhammad Bashir had to adjourned the case after it was informed that Dar's counsel, Khawaja Haris, was in overseas.

When judge inquired about the arrival of Haris, the junior counsel said that he will come by Wednesday of next week.

The court had indicted Dar last month in a NAB reference pertaining to his owning assets "beyond his known sources of income".

Gondal provided details of the account held by Dar in the bank.

The NAB authorities had provided a list of 28 witnesses in the case on which the court directed the prosecution to produce two of the witnesses on next hearing, which is scheduled for today.

Ishaq Dar reached the accountability court of Judge Mohammad Bashir at the Judicial Complex in Islamabad for his seventh appearance today.

The minister also challenged his indictment and trial in the Islamabad High Court but the pleas were dismissed with directions to take them to Justice Ijazul Ahsan - the Supreme Court judge monitoring the corruption references.

In its case against the Finance Minister, the NAB has alleged that "the accused has acquired assets and pecuniary interests/resources in his own name and/or in the name of his dependants of an approximate amount of 831 million Pakistan rupees ($7 million)".
