Apple diversity largely unchanged despite new hires

The proportion of women in its leadership ranks only rose slightly in the a year ago and among its tech workers, didn't change at all. The company said 15 percent of its new hires over the past year are Hispanic, while 11 percent are black.

Apple has released a video about inclusion and diversity in the company, and it can be viewed here.

The new data, released Thursday, also highlights that Apple added more women to its leadership ranks in 2017.

Apple released its latest diversity report on Thursday, showing that, despite its stated commitment to diversifying its workforce, the iPhone maker remains predominately white and male. "Twenty-nine percent of leaders at Apple are women, and 39 percent of our leaders under 30 are women".

Overall at the company, the proportion of women remained unchanged and the percentage of underrepresented minorities barely nudged. When it came to underrepresented minorities, Apple reported a 1 percentage point increase from 2016 to 23 percent.

"Meaningful change takes time", the company said in its report.

Apple also stressed that it has added more women to its leadership ranks. "My comments were not representative of how I think about diversity or how Apple sees it". Of the 19 senior executives shown on the page, only five are women, and just two are black.

These efforts aside, white and Asian men still make up the majority of Apple's workforce.

"I focus on everyone", Smith said at a summit in Bogota when asked about whether she would focus on black women at Apple. The proportion of underrepresented minorities - blacks, Hispanics, and multiracial people - actually declined in the past year from 18% to 17%. From July 2016, half of Apple's new hires in the USA were from historically underrepresented groups in technology - women, Black, Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Island groups. Among the additions at the top of the tech giant are Katherine Adams, Apple's new general counsel; Isabel Ge Mahe, who oversees Apple's work in China and Deirdre O'Brien, who recently was elevated to become the company's vice president of People.

"In 2017, we dedicated a portion of the proceeds from our Pride Edition Apple Watch band to help support the work of GLSEN, PFLAG, The Trevor Project, and ILGA".
