Crab Is Seen Hunting a Bird in 'Gruesome' First

Researcher Mark Laidre from Dartmouth College New Hampshire in America filmed the macabre sight which may shed new light on the behaviour of this species

Researcher Mark Laidre from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire in America, filmed the macabre sight which may shed new light on the behaviour of this species and he spoke to New Scientist about the incredible discovery.

Laidre claims the crab climbed a tree to launch a deadly raid on the bird's nest, breaking one of its wings to cause it to fall to the ground.

The killer crab was spotted stalking and then systematically breaking the wings of the bird before devouring it.

He told the New Scientist: "At that point, when both its wings were broken and it was on the ground, it couldn't go anywhere". What's more, the commotion attracted a number of other huge crabs in the immediate vicinity and before long there was a handful of the creatures tearing the bird apart.

Seabirds apparently have a surprising new predator to worry about.

Coconut grabs are the largest land-dwelling invertebrate, weighing up to 4kg and one-metre wide.

A researcher in Japan previously proved last year that the the crab can pinch with a force of up to 3300 newtons, stronger than any other crustacean and comparable to a big predator's bite, like a lion.

The creepy-crawly here is a coconut crab, so named because their size and remarkable pinching force allows them to slice open tasty coconuts and feast on them. The video only shows a brief portion of this half-hour-long saga (thankfully), but it's enough to show just how efficiently the crab was able to dispatch its peculiar choice of prey.

But a disturbing theory suggests the body of Amelia Earhart, an American aviator who disappeared in 1937 following a flight over the Pacific Ocean, were never found because she was eaten by coconut crabs, reported
