Britain blanketed by first real snow of the season

Frosty Monday Morning

Temperatures dropped to -4C (24.8F) across large swaths of the United Kingdom on Sunday night - but it was not the chilliest night of the autumn so far.

Colder weather and snow is set to last longer this year due to the La Nina weather phenomenon, which last hit the United Kingdom in 2010, when much of the country was covered with heavy snowfall.

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples added: "This would make it the coldest night of autumn so far and the cold weather will last until mid-week before temperatures start to recover". There could be sleet or snow on higher ground in those northern areas.

"Minimum temperatures could exceed the coldest temperatures of the season".

The Met Office said the run up to Christmas will see temperatures below normal, with an increased risk of snow, especially in the North.

"There's every possibility of temperatures as cold or colder than Monday morning".

The Met Office predicts highs of 13C (55F) in the south by Wednesday before the freeze returns next week.

And we can also expect snow within the three weeks, The Weather Outlook says, across both the north and southern areas of the UK.

The plunging temperatures mean Britain will be much colder than Iceland, where the mercury would hover around 1C on Sunday.

Forecasters had expected temperatures of as low as -7C - colder than the -6C recorded in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, on 6 November.

'But it becomes colder on Friday and at the weekend, with showery conditions with snow possible over northern hills'.

The UK is then set to plunge to temperatures as low as -15C as part of an "early winter" last three weeks until December 10, according to AccuWeather.
