Dinosaurs would have survived!

Dinosaur

And so the dinosaurs would have carried on living, long before the era in which they went extinct.

If the asteroid had crashed into any other part of the planet, like in the middle of most continents or the ocean, the giant reptiles could have survived annihilation. Their sophisticated model suggests that the asteroid slammed into the planet with the force of 40,000 United States nuclear warheads, all triggered in a matter of seconds. However, the impact alone wouldn't have spelled global destruction. The huge cloud of sulfur that loomed over the planet's surface blocked the sun, causing a dramatic cooling.

With soot blocking the sunlight, the Earth's average temperature dropped by about 10 degrees Celsius (18 F), destroying plant life and driving the existing ecosystem to collapse.

According to the new research done by experts at the Tohoku University in Japan, the severity of the climate changes could vary depending on the location where the asteroid had hit. A recent study shows that there was only a 13% chance of the mass extinction of the species, which occurred 66 million years ago, and if the asteroid, which wiped out the dinosaurs from our planet, had struck nearly anywhere except for where it actually did, the dinosaurs could have survived and who knows they could be our pets today, or we theirs!

According to calculations made by the two, only 13 percent of Earth's surface is made up of rocks that could have burned off that much soot. The force of the impact heated the materials, "forming stratospheric soot and sulfate aerosols and causing extreme global cooling and drought", the scientists report in the paper.

If, however, the asteroid had crashed into marine coastal areas rich in algae, such as the present-day eastern coast of North America, the Middle East, and Siberia, then the collision would have had the same effect on dinosaurs as the one that created the Chicxulub crater.

A group of Japanese cosmologists and paleontologists in the research came to the conclusion that the extinction of the dinosaurs on Earth 66 million years ago was possible thanks to the coincidence.

"They were unlucky", Kaiho told Britain's Guardian newspaper. To be fair, it would still have been incredibly devastating for life on Earth even otherwise but not quite as rough as it was.

The new study finds that had the asteroid impacted any of that other 87% of Earth, the dinosaurs might still be alive today. At the end of the day, we can sleep maybe a bit more soundly knowing that an asteroid is not likely to reach its maximum damaging potential - though history showed it sure could.
