Sensex ends lower as HDFC, L&T stocks plunge

Sensex Nifty fall in early trade amid weak Asian markets

Indian markets are likely to start Monday's session on a flat note, with the SGX Nifty on the Singapore Exchange trading 9 points lower at 10,333.

The NSE Nifty50 rose by 12.80 points, or 0.12 per cent, to close at 10,321.75 points, while the BSE Sensex closed at 33,314.56 points - up 63.63 points or 0.19 per cent.

Market breadth was in the favour of gainers, with about 2 stocks advancing to every 1 stock that declined.

India's benchmark indices slipped after opening higher on Monday.

A weakening rupee, which depreciated by 35 paise to 65.51 against the dollar during the day on fears that the tax rate decision of the GST Council will have a revenue implication of Rs 20,000 crore annually, too dampened investor sentiment.

"Oil price worries kept energy shares such as Reliance Industries under pressure".

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said: "Domestic investors turned cautious giving more weight to slow down in IIP to 3.8 per cent, geopolitical tensions in Middle East and continued advancement in crude prices".

All the sub-indices of the BSE ended in the red except the IT index, which closed up 19.80 points. The BSE Telecom index and Metal index tumbled 1.94 per cent and 1.84 per cent. Consumer Durables, Capital Goods and Realty also tanked 1.76 per cent, 1.55 per cent and 1.50 per cent, respectively.

Coal India retreated 3 per cent after the company reported lower profits for a sixth straight quarter.
