Volkswagen Beetle set to go electric and rear-wheel drive

Either way, there's no true indicator of whether or not the EV Beetle will actually be happening, but given the iconic status of the auto itself, it's a pretty good bet we'll be seeing one hit the road in the near future.

Volkswagen is considering plans for an electric Beetle, according to VW's chairman Herbert Diess.

Speaking to Autocar, Diess said that the company was "actively considering" plans for an electric Beetle as part of a range of zero-emissions cars. The vehicle would compliment the new Volkswagen Microbus, based on the ID Buzz Concept shown early this year at the Detroit auto show. Reports indicate that the has been no firm decision on if the EV Beetle will be built or not. The executive notes MEB is an ally for "emotional concepts" thanks to its flexibility. We have a very flexible platform.

The reference to rear-wheel drive stemmed from the layout planned for Volkswagen's first fully dedicated electric-powered model, as previewed by the ID hatchback at last year's Paris motor show. It runs a single electric motor developing 168bhp that is mounted within the rear axle assembly, providing drive to the rear wheels. If the decision to issue an electric Volkswagen Beetle still be made, then engineers would make it as close in design to the original. That will be for the company's board to vote on when considering its upcoming range of electric cars. Diess even went on to say an EV Beetle would be much better than the current version.
