Child in critical condition after being trapped in vehicle

The child of unknown age and gender was discovered on Maddox Road in the inner Melbourne suburb of Newport

An eight-year-old boy is fighting for life after being trapped in a vehicle during sweltering temperatures in Melbourne on Monday afternoon.

According to the Herald Sun, the boy attends St Margaret Mary's Catholic Primary School.

Unaware her son was in the vehicle, the woman continued on for 10 minutes to her workplace at another school in nearby Newport, at Maddox Road.

'The boy's mother dropped her children at primary school in the morning however, didn't realise one of the kids had climbed into the rear of the auto and hid himself, ' Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said on Tuesday.

While the day started as normal for the family, the boy never made it to school.

Detectives say it is unclear how the boy came to be in the auto but believe it is not suspicious.

He was treated for critical injuries and was transported into the Royal Children's Hospital where he remains in a critical condition Tuesday evening.

His classmates and teachers are being offered counselling and support.

In summer, it can be up to 30C hotter than outside.

Footage from the scene showed police examining a black people mover, parked in the street, which was later removed.

Police said they did not need to break into the auto to reach the boy.

Another resident who saw the commotion said it was a 'very sad situation'.

Police said they are treating the incident as an accident.

"I can't imagine what the parents would be going through".

Temperatures in Melbourne struck 32C about 3pm.

As a young mum, she left her son in a auto for five minutes to run into a shop, and came back to find him having a febrile convulsion. You forget just how hot it can get in the vehicle.
