Devastating tremors in Iran and Iraq: the death toll is growing rapidly

On the Iraq side of the border, 11 people were killed and the most damage was seen in Darbandikhan, near the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Less than 48 hours after a 7.3 natural disaster hit Iraq and Iran, authorities in Iran have called off rescue efforts, saying there's little chance of finding survivors in the country's quake-prone western region.

Kermanshah, an nearly entirely Kurdish province nestled in the Zagros Mountains that run along the border with Iraq, suffered all of Iran's fatalities from quake that shook 14 of the country's 31 provinces.

Tremors were felt also in the Iraqi provinces of Erbil, Halabja and Dohuk, where Kurds live predominantly. Filed with the United Nations within a radius of 15 km from the epicenter of the quake live about 19 thousand people. Meshkat told Reuters, "More people will die because of the cold".

Rouhani Tuesday visited the town of Sar-e Pol-e Zahab, worst hit by the quake.

The authorities said water and electricity had returned to most affected regions.

"People in some villages are still in dire need of food, water and shelter", said Faramarz Akbari, a local elected official from Kermanshah province.

Iranian medical officials announced that several field hospitals have been set up in the quake-hit areas.

At least 280 people were killed in the town, home to some 85,000 people, where crumpled vehicles lay under the rubble of flattened buildings on the streets.

The official IRNA news agency said 30 Red Crescent teams had been sent to the area.

The Iranian army, the elite Revolutionary Guards and forces of its affiliated Basij militia were dispatched to affected areas on Sunday.

Thirteen years later, a catastrophic quake flattened swathes of the ancient southeastern Iranian city of Bam, killing at least 31,000.
