Drinking coffee may decrease risk of heart failure, stroke

GETTYCoffee health benefits Weekly cup'could slash risk of heart failure and stroke

Internal medicine resident Dr Lara considered previous studies which show that what people eat can have an impact on atherosclerosis, the narrowing of the arteries that underlies heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. Each additional cup of coffee drunk per day decreased all of these conditions by 5%, 7% and 8% respectively, if consumed up to six cups at least a day.

The study was carried out using an artificially intelligent machine-learning system.

While many risk factors for heart failure and stroke are well known, the researchers believe it is likely that there are as-yet unidentified risk factors.

Lead researcher Dr Kyla Lara, from Mount Sinai Hospital in NY, said: "Eating a diet mostly of dark green leafy plants, fruits, beans, whole grains and fish, while limiting processed meats, saturated fats, trans fats, refined carbohydrates and foods high in added sugars is a heart-healthy lifestyle and may specifically help prevent heart failure if you don't already have it".

A plant-based diet and drinking coffee may both help to reduce the risk of heart failure, say scientists.

Foods such as eggs, fried food, offal, alcohol and salads were not associated with a decreased risk for heart failure.

"Our findings suggest that machine learning could help us identify additional factors to improve existing risk assessment models".

In the first instance, the researchers employed the random forests algorithm in machine learning to examine data sourced from the Framingham Heart Study, which has been running since 1948, providing crucial information about cardiovascular health.

Heart failure is a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the heart is too week to pump blood efficiently around the body. Further investigation to better determine how red meat consumption affects risk for heart failure and stroke is ongoing.

The researchers identified that of the above discussed five dietary patterns, the plant-based dietary pattern was found to be greatly linked to a 42% reduced risk of incident heart failure over the four years of the study after being adjusted for race, sex, age of patients, and other risk factors. "By including coffee in the model, the prediction accuracy increased by 4 percent". Author disclosures are on the abstract.

The findings, presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association in Anaheim, California, today, were observational, and couldn't show cause-and-effect, but they fit with other research, says Lara.

Researchers evaluated five dietary patterns. The association has strict policies to prevent these relationships from influencing the science content. Revenues from pharmaceutical and device corporations are available at www.heart.org/corporatefunding. The Dallas-based association is the nation's oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.
