EgyptAir's Bombardier CSeries outline deal valued at $1.1 billion

The deal is the second firm order for Bombardier aircraft since last month's announcement that European plane maker Airbus would take over Bombardier's CSeries programme. The deal is valued at $1.1 billion before discounts.

The US trade department imposed tariffs of 300% on the C Series as it upheld a complaint from Boeing over subsidies the aircraft received from the Canadian and United Kingdom governments. Its presence is "adding confidence about the long-term success of the programme", he said on November 2.

The U.S. Commerce Department has imposed harsh duties on Bombardier, charging the Canadian company of selling the C Series planes in America below cost and receiving government subsidies.

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft President Fred Cromer said the deal "confirms the need for right-sized aircraft in the Middle East".

Earlier this month, Bombardier also revealed it had secured orders for 31 aircraft from an unnamed European customer. The jet, the larger of two C Series versions, can carry 130 to 160 passengers. The C Series was two-and-a-half years late and more than $2bn over budget when it entered service at Deutsche Lufthansa's Swiss International unit in July 2016. Swiss and Air Baltic Corp., which began flying the CS300 in December, have reported better-than-expected fuel efficiency, which is key to the jet's appeal.

"We undertook a thorough evaluation process of our fleet and realised that the CS300 would fit perfectly into our business plans and growth strategy", EgyptAir CEO Safwat Musallam said in the statement.
