Federal Bureau of Investigation data shows hate crimes appeared to drop in Wisconsin

The FBI says hate crimes jumped by five percent across the country past year, with bias incidents involving race or ethnicity showing the largest increase.

Of the hate crimes reported in South Dakota, six were based on a victim's race or ethnicity, five were based on sexual orientation and three were based on a victim's disability.

Hate crimes in the USA saw a 4.6 percent increase in 2016, jumping to 6,121 reported incidents from 5,800 the previous year, an Federal Bureau of Investigation report said Monday. More than half the 4,200 racially motivated crimes were against black people.

Singh said it will be hard for the country to mobilise political will and resources necessary to address the issue if law enforcement agencies fail to document true extent of hate crimes.

Muslims and Jews were the most common targets in the US, with anti-Muslim bias making up the second highest religious bias at 25 percent behind anti-Jewish bias, which accounted for about 55 percent, making Jews the most targeted group in the U.S. Hate crimes targeting Arabs rose by about 38 percent, while crimes targeting whites and Latinos rose by about 17 percent and 15 percent respectively.

The number of hate crimes targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people also went up past year. Additionally, there were 105 incidents against transgender people last year, a rise of 44 percent from the year before. "The department of justice is committed to ensuring that individuals can live without fear of being a victim of violent crime based on who they are, what they believe, or how they worship", attorney general Jeff Sessions said in a statement. In all, nine murders and 24 rapes were reported as hate crimes.
