Iraq Kurds say they respect federal court decision banning independence

UNHCR 3.2 million people displaced across Iraq

Abadi spoke a few hours after the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced a concession to Iraq's central government by saying it would accept a court decision prohibiting the region from seceding.

The KRG said on Tuesday it would respect the November 6 ruling by the Supreme Federal Court, which declared that no Iraqi province could secede.

The ruling responded to a request from the Iraqi government in Baghdad to put an end to any "misinterpretation" of the constitution and to "assert the unity of Iraq", a court spokesman said last week.

The statement is seen as the latest efforts by KRG to start a dialogue with Baghdad that can lead to a peaceful breakaway.

In September, the KRG held a controversial referendum on Kurdish regional secession, a vote decried by Baghdad as illegitimate.

The development comes two months after voters in the semi-autonomous region overwhelmingly voted in support of an independence referendum. Earlier KRG used to claim Kirkuk to be Kurdish area which could be the backbone of the proposed Kurdistan.

The Iraqi armed forces have threatened to resume military operations against the Kurds, accusing them of delaying the handover of control of borders and taking advantage of negotiations to bolster their defences.

According to the statement released by the Iraqi presidency after a meeting with Douglas Silliman, the USA ambassador to Baghdad, Masoum said that the success of security forces against Daesh stemmed from Iraqis' resolution to live together in a free, democratic and peaceful country.

"We've had for many years a very good relationship with the Kurds as you know and we've also been on the side of Iraq, even though we should have never been there in the first place", Trump told reporters at the the White House, according to Reuters. However, Washington did not announce its intent around the referendum.
