Lord of the Rings Franchise Gets TV Spinoff

Lord of the Rings

It is one of the largest such deals in the history of TV and it is evidence of Amazon's faith in the profitability of the project.

Amazon has confirmed that its media branch, Amazon TV, has secured the rights to produce a new series based on the Lord of the Rings fantasy novels. In an effort to emulate the success of the fantasy series Game of Thrones, the giant bookseller will be teaming up with New Line Cinema, the Warner Bros. division that brought the original films to the big screen, to create a show that could last several years and include spinoffs of its own.

The new series will reportedly focus on brand new storylines that will likely precede the events portrayed on The Fellowship of the Ring.

Tolkien fans take notice.

"We are delighted that Amazon, with its long-standing commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings", said Matt Galsor, who represents the Tolkien estate and trust and HarperCollins, in his statement. The original trilogy starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom-no word yet if any of the original cast will be asked to be in the Amazon series.

A world-renowned literary work, and victor of the International Fantasy Award and Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, The Lord of the Rings novels was named Amazon customers' favorite book of the millennium in 1999 and Britain's best-loved novel of all time in BBC's The Big Read in 2003.

Lord of the Rings is huge, yet people we left feeling a little bit cheated after Peter Jackson's subpar Hobbit trilogy.

Starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom and others, the three films combined to gross more than United States dollars 2.9 billion worldwide.

The Tolkien Estate had also approached Netflix and HBO, according to Hollywood entertainment website Deadline, which reported the deal came with an eye-watering upfront rights payment of around $200 million.
