OnePlus accused of leaving a backdoor to give root access

OnePlus comes under scanner over the issue of users’ privacy

The startup apparently left a diagnostic app preinstalled on its smartphones since the OnePlus 3 that, with just some simple nudging, can be used to gain root access to the device, with or without the user's knowledge.

A potentially unsafe backdoor in multiple OnePlus devices has been just unearthed by a knowing developer, revealing a hidden app that can be potentially used to gain root access and take control over the device.

On the one hand, it does mean that it will be dead simple to root those three OnePlus phones without even having to unlock the bootloader. A malicious app or malware that is built around this loophole would potentially be able to target OnePlus devices and wreck havoc. OnePlus devices could be rooted on launching "DiagEnabled" activity in the APK with a specified password that was found by decompiling "libdoor.so" with the help of a few cyber-security experts. The app has the ability to diagnose Global Positioning System, check root status and perform a series of tests.

Root implies to the highest degree of access to an Android operating system that is usually deployed to safeguard the privacy of the user.

Mere days ahead of the OnePlus 5T launch and OnePlus has been accused of inadvertent installing a backdoor into its phones which hackers could exploit to seize control of affected phones. However, it can be exploited to enable backdoor rooting.

He further claims that the company has intentionally left the backdoor on their devices.

For its part, OnePlus has confirmed that the company is looking into the claims made by the developer.

Earlier, according to a post on Christopher Moore's blog, OnePlus is collecting sensitive private data like IMEI numbers, mobile network names and IMSI prefixes, MAC addresses, and more. Following the allegations, OnePlus took some steps, and added the new "opt-in" option for the user experience program.
