Sony Developing Film Based On Spider-Man Villain Morbius

Morbius the Living Vampire Movie in Development at Sony

It's also not clear how far into the process the writers are, and since Sony declined comment on the story, we may not know for some time. Developed in secret, it's come to light that the studio is moving forward with a movie based on Morbius the Living Vampire.

While it has been said the new Sony Spider-Man spinoff movies are not connected to Marvel Studios, the article notes "the studio, however, is being coy as to whether or not these new movies will be connected to Sony's Tom Holland movies or connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is being produced by Marvel Studios". Basically, he's the Yuri Boyka of the Spider-Man 'verse, only instead of kicking ass, he bites necks and wears tights. While the actual character of Peter Parker is now being lent to Marvel Studios, hence why Spider-Man: Homecoming took place in the MCU, Sony still has the rights to all the other Spider-Man characters.

Which leads us to today's news - a spin-off in Sony's Spider-Man universe centered around Morbius The Living Vampire (pictured above, in full plasma-drinking glory). Morbius is an antihero first introduced as a supernatural Spider-Man villain in Roy Thomas and Gil Kane's Amazing Spider-Man #101, who eventually went on to become a tragic antihero with his own title. Michael Morbius was a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease, and in an attempt to cure himself of it, he dabbled in unconventional science.

The upcoming film, titled simply Morbius for now, will be written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.

He's well-known to fans of "Spider-Man: The Animated Series", which ran on Fox Kids from 1994 to 1998, and featured a Morbius plotline. The upside is that, while not fully a vampire, he gained abilities like superhuman strength and speed, as well as heightened senses. He started out as a villain but became more of an anti-hero later on.

Just when you thought that Sony's Spider-Man cinematic universe featuring everyone except for Spider-Man couldn't get any weirder, 2017 hits again. First and foremost, Morbius needs a good story.

How do you feel about Sony's potential Morbius movie?
