Turnbull cops a battering over same-sex marriage

Joe Spagnolo believes many people have had enough of the same-sex marriage debate

The ABS media conference will be broadcast live on major TV networks, and shortly after, more stats will be available on the ABS website for a breakdown of who participated in the postal vote.

"It's very straightforward, if there is a "yes" vote, then we'll facilitate a private member's bill to legalise same-sex marriage, and if there's a "no" vote, we won't, that's it", Turnbull said.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, a moderate who supports marriage equality, has pledged that if a majority vote "yes", his government will quickly introduce a bill to change the marriage laws.

"After the result is known on Wednesday, it is my intention to canvass support to introduce a Bill this week".

"They can be debated ... but they shouldn't be confused with this bill which is created to deliver marriage equality".

According to the Australian the Paterson bill could be tabled in parliament as early as Wednesday and debated at the Coalition party room in two weeks, although Smith has said he will introduce his bill on Thursday, immediately after the survey result.

"If we were not to implement a decision on marriage equality, the nation would throw up its hands and give up on the parliament", he told a meeting of opposition senators in Canberra.

The postal ballot appeared its only option amid public pressure for action.

"Anti-discrimination law has served Australia and LGBTI people well".

"[But] I don't believe Australians would welcome, and certainly the Government would not countenance, making legal discrimination that is unlawful today".

"I think it would have virtually no prospect of getting through the parliament", Mr Turnbull said, emphasising it was up to MPs and not the government to approve legislation.

LGBT activists also said this bill runs counter to the will of the Australian people casting a vote for equality, not a "license to discriminate".

In August, a month before the ballot papers were sent out, fears that the debate was turning toxic rose when a poster emblazoned "stop the fags" was put up in central Melbourne and flyers describing homosexuality as "a curse of death" were distributed in suburban Sydney.

"This moment can't be the moment we literally do the opposite of what the people are saying".

"It's a huge burden on that area, which is already in high demand".

MPs would be free to move "any amendments they want" to a private bill, he said.

However, this vote is nonbinding, which means it is up to the country's Parliament to pass legislation.

Australia has edged closer to legalising same-sex marriage with a diverse group of cross-party senators backing a Liberal senator's bill to change the law.
