Amazon's Australia launch "really, really close"

Amazon summit insight into what operating in New Zealand could look like

Inc is "really close" to opening in Australia, its country manager said on Monday, as the United States e-commerce juggernaut prepares to shake up an already-fragile brick-and-mortar retail sector in the world's No. 12 economy.

Amazon.com Inc is "really close" to opening in Australia, its country manager said on Monday, as the USA e-commerce juggernaut prepares to shake up an already-fragile brick-and-mortar retail sector in the world's No. 12 economy.

There is, however, a picture emerging for suppliers about the opportunities available to them via Amazon's platform, and what these will cost.

Apart from Braeuniger, Head of Amazon Marketplace in Australia, Fabio Bertola also addressed the audience.

Amazon itself announced during its Australian Summit that its warehouses in the country are ready to fulfill orders both for its own offerings and for third-party partners.

"We have some concerns that our product could be re-sold on Amazon Marketplace by just about anyone at lower prices than the premium price that we charge, which may not be great for our reputation", they said. He offered practical guidance on how businesses can take their businesses to millions of customers across Australia and around the world via Amazon Marketplace.

Retailers have always been promised that Marketplace would open the world to them for a low fee, and the exact scale of these fees in the Australian market have now been revealed.

The "take rate" from Amazon for certain products is higher than that of eBay, which takes between six and 10 per cent depending on the category.

"In Australia there are a lot of SMEs that have a unique selection that's interesting for customers", he said.

While he hinted that the company would wait to take on the fresh grocery market in the country, it is thought that Amazon will immediately seek to gain a wider retail market share but offering discounted prices. "We want to be Earth's most customer-centric company".

Amazon is also not phased by the size of companies coming on board, with the company using an online supplier portal to call for expressions of interest and explain that all Aussie brands should apply.

Since the launch of its Marketplace in 2000, Amazon has helped businesses around the globe to increase sales and reach new customers.
