Mantashe disappointed in those pushing rumours of his possible removal

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe

According to Gwede Mantashe, ANC secretary general, "The ANC calls on government to reject the proposal of (a) cost-sharing model, which will further indebt students and different classifications of students".

Governing African National Congress (ANC) says it will not intervene to end the crisis unfolding in neighbouring Zimbabwe, amid fears that the military could overthrow 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe, the world's oldest ruler.

"This is done to allow sufficient time to consider appeals, all of which must be lodged within 48 hours of the disputed BGMs, and to prepare for the provincial general councils". Ninety percent of them would be delegates elected at branches.

The NEC reflected at length on the Eastern Cape 8th Provincial Conference. While nearly 70% of the branches have concluded nominations, critical provinces, such as KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the North West, are lagging behind.

It was reported on Monday that some NEC members called on Mantashe to be sacked for his handling of the Eastern Cape conference that turned violent.

Mantashe has been criticised for once saying that current Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa should become president and that Dlamini-Zuma should be his deputy.

Mantashe said the ANC condemned the use of violence to achieve a winning result at conferences and expressed sympathy with those who were injured when delegates started throwing chairs at one another.

"The region was, however, expected to continue doing its work in all other areas, including the overseeing of BGMs as we prepare for conference".

He also announced that the conference, which takes place under the theme Remember Tambo: Towards Unity, Renewal and Radical Socio-Economic Transformation, will be attended by 5 240 voting delegates.

A task team of seven members - four from the national executive committee (NEC) and three "technical" staffers - were assigned to the province to deal with the appeal.

The NEC received reports from the NEC deployees to the conference, the elected PEC, the disgruntled group and another by the National Working Committee.

The NEC team includes Sbu Ndebele, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Joyce Moloi-Moropa and Sdumo Dlamini.
