MLB Awards: Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo named 2017 NL Manager of the Year

The Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo and the Twins' Paul Molitor were awarded Baseball Writers Association of America's Manager of the Year award.

Lovullo, who became the third Arizona manager to win the Manager of Year Award, collected 18 first-place votes, beating out Dodgers manager Dave Roberts by 56 points and the Rockies' Bud Black by 68. The American and National League baseball Managers of the Year will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017.

By way of reminder, votes are cast before the postseason even begins, so not only is this a regular season award, but it's impossible for anyone to weigh the postseason.

Lovullo, in his first season with Arizona, managed the team to a 93-69 record - 24 more wins than last season, the second-largest win increase from 2016 among all teams - and into the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

The Twins went 85-77 this season and earned their first playoff spot since 2010 before losing to the Yankees in the AL wild-card game. Kirk Gibson won it in 2011 and Bob Melvin won it in 2007. Here's the breakdown (note two CBS Sports voters). Updates with Molitor winning AL Manager of the Year.

Molitor, who just completed his third season in charge of the Twins, is a member of the Hall of Fame as a player. The Cleveland Indians' Terry Francona, the 2016 victor, was the runner-up with 11 first-place votes.

Molitor joined Frank Robinson as the only Hall of Fame players to win a manager of the year award, which was first presented in 1983.

Powered by Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and midseason acquisition J.D. Martinez, and led by pitchers Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray, the Diamondbacks made the playoffs this year. Third-place finisher A.J. Hinch of the Astros had one first-place vote, 13 second-place votes, and 12 third-place votes.
