PH, New Zealand expand deal

Australia 'should accept NZ refugee offer'

The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Philippines Commission on Higher Education on the Comparative Analysis of New Zealand and the Philippines' Bachelor's Degrees happened during the bilateral meeting of President Duterte and Ardern at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City late Tuesday night.

"Canada is not only willing, but ready to be a key partner for the next 50 years", Trudeau said in a speech in Manila, Philippines, at a special ASEAN-Canada summit in front of leaders of an alliance that includes Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

There was not much buzz about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during her first Philippine visit, but she ended the trip with agreements signed with her host government and the country's national carrier that are seen to boost ties between the two countries.

Ardern said during the bilateral meeting that the signing of the agreement is in recognition of the Philippines and New Zealand's ties on education.

"It's a strong, buoyant community and well-loved", she said.

Ardern also praised Romeo Udanga whom she said did a "phenomenal job" during last year's election in New Zealand.

Australia is aware of that spend and Ardern said she imagined they would be pleased rather than embarrassed to see New Zealand stepping in to assist with a resolution.

Two motions introduced in Australia's parliament by the Labor and Green parties, and passed in the upper house yesterday, call on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to approve the New Zealand proposal.

"I may be able to say they decided right because Auckland treats it citizens superbly", he said. No doubt about it. Duterte and Ardern sat for bilateral talks at the summit's conclusion on Tuesday.

Mr Turnbull this month rejected the refugee resettlement offer from his New Zealand counterpart, Jacinda Ardern, preferring instead to work through an existing refugee swap deal he negotiated with former US President Barack Obama.

The opposition is sceptical of claims by the Prime Minister that progress has been made on New Zealand's offer to Australia to resettle 150 refugees from offshore detention centres.

"We always contribute to humanitarian efforts around the place and I'm sure this will be on some assistance within what is a very large Australian budget of close to $1 billion".
