Beer on Mars? Budweiser is working on it

Further experiments will likely include getting the beer from the bottle to the mouth because as anyone who's watched a video of someone in zero gravity knows, liquids behave weirdly in space. Budweiser's Vice President Ricardo Marques stated in a statement that we are so excited to begin our research to brew beer for the Mars.

- Budweiser is sending barley seeds to the International Space Station to advance its bid to be the first beer on Mars. NASA is now working towards the possible astronaut Mars missions in 2030. The process requires water, as well, a substance the red planet is not known for. And the commitment was more than just talk: The initiative is a partnership with CASIS, the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, which manages the U.S. National Laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). The experiments are formerly titled as Barley Germination and Malting in Microgravity. The company intends to study how the seeds would react in a unique "microgravity environment". Barley seeds are best grown in cool, dry places. Afterwards, they will be sent back to Earth, where researchers will perform a series of tests on them. For the second one, researchers will focus on the growth of the seeds into sprouts. On the ground, barley typically grows tall 2 to 3 meters in a two week period.

The barley seeds will grow in a Space Tango CubeLab, a facility that hosts small-scle experiments.

But before it can do that, it is attempting to figure out how to brew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with help from the astronauts on board.

Together, the team plans to send 20 barley seeds on a SpaceX CRS-13 rocket that will launch on December 4 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It will remain at the International Space Station for a month before coming back to Earth to be analyzed by Budweiser's team of scientists. Not only will the research offer insights on steps to creating beer on the Red Planet, but it could also provide valuable information on the production of barley and the larger agricultural community here on earth.
