Rio de Janeiro police, soldiers capture famed drug trafficker

Drug boss Rogerio Avelino da Silva is escorted by police officers in Rio de Janeiro

The arrest of Rogerio Avelino da Silva came amid an operation in the northern part of the city that included almost 3,000 police and army soldiers who have been sent in to help stabilise areas of frequent conflict.

Brazilian authorities have detained one of Rio de Janeiro's most notorious drug traffickers.

Police say Rogerio 157 controlled part of the sprawling Rocinha favela, which he took over after the arrest of the drug lord known as "Nem" for whom he used to work as a bodyguard.

Da Silva, known as "Rogerio 157", is accused of crimes including homicide, trafficking and extortion.

Nearly 3,000 police and troops were deployed Wednesday in the operation in which "Rogerio 157" was captured, local media said.

As the alleged crime boss of the huge Rocinha favela, da Silva was one of the most powerful underworld figures in the 2016 Summer Olympics host city.

Rio police also published a video of the arrest on Twitter.

The days-long violence in Rocinha resulted in the authorities deploying more than 1,000 officers and soldiers, as well as armored cars and helicopters, to the favela to stop the gang warfare. A $15,000 reward was offered for information leading to his arrest.

Over the last few months, several police operations which shut down parts of Rio and often led to shootouts have been focused on apprehending da Silva. Some of them took selfies with the suspect.

According to Brazilian media, the gang warfare was prompted by Rogerio 157's decision to extend his authority over Rocinha, collecting taxes and taking control of cooking-gas distribution, as well as other important economic activities.

According to media reports, da Silva's current problems began when he attempted to shake off the authority of his jailed former Rocinha boss "Nem", whose real name is Antonio Bonfim Lopes, and who still reportedly exercises considerable control from behind bars.
