Airline Crew Says They Saw North Korean Test Missile Re-Enter Atmosphere

Putin and Xi

Channel NewsAsia found out that Singapore Airlines (SIA) has taken steps to reroute its Seoul-Los Angeles flights since July this year, following Pyongyang's July 27 missile launch into the Sea of Japan.

"These two images from the same viewpoint show dramatically opposite sky areas", the expert continued. "The other shows Andromeda with the Andromeda galaxy, which is northwest".

He also compared two other photos that seem to have been mirror images of the launch but the constellations were different.

A Japan Airlines spokesman said the cockpit crew of one of its airliners, flying from Tokyo to London, "saw a bright flame falling down" over the sea of Japan.

"That was one thing that was a reason to grow suspicious".

He also told CNN: "You should see constellations that are opposites in the sky. They apparently just didn't care enough to do it correctly", Langbroek wrote.

Langbroek determined the direction of the photo based on the shape of the plumes of smoke coming from the rocket engine. Not all images were tampered with, he noted. However, the longer exposure means that movement is captured as a blur.

Langbroek's analysis confirms the early suspicion of Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who doubted some of the pictures as soon as they were released last week. Moreover, a wide-open aperture and fast shutter speed would be used to capture the missile's rapid ascent, in which case, stars would not be seen clearly in an image, even in North Korea where there was very low light pollution.

"I am skeptical about the stars, it's hard to get stars and foreground objects in same pic-is it possible it's photoshop", McDowell wrote on Twitter as part of a conversation among experts analysing the pictures to confirm the missile launch location and timing.

Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham said Sunday on "Face the Nation" that preemptive war in North Korea is "becoming more likely" as the country's improving missile technology presents an increasing threat. I started to look at the pictures of the actual launch moment.

"An ICBM soaring into the stars makes for good propaganda images".
