First responder to Pulse nightclub massacre could face pension cut

Officer Omar Delgado, with the Eatonville Police Department, was one of the first officers to respond to the shooting at Pulse, pulling people to safety.

The Eatonville Police Department told News 6 that the town of Eatonville made a decision to terminate Delgado's employment on December 31. "I needed help, and I guess I'm being punished because I asked for help".

Delgado was lauded as a hero at Pulse for saving Angel Colon, who had been shot several times as gunfire erupted inside the nightclub June 12, 2016.

She continued, "An extra six months on the job would have allowed Delgado to receive 64% of his salary with benefits for life, the Orlando Sentinel reported".

Delgado says he doesn't understand the department's decision to terminate him without his full benefits.

But he says the June 12, 2016 attack, in which gunman Omar Mateen killed 49 and injured dozens others in what was then the worst mass shooting in US history, left him changed.

Colon, who was shot multiple times, told ABC News in an interview past year that he would have "bled to death" if not for the officer who rescued him roughly 25 minutes after gunfire erupted, allowing him to get lifesaving treatment.

At the Eatonville Town Council's meeting on Tuesday, the council moved to remove him from the force completely. Officer Delgado says that a year and a half later, he is tormented by the same nightmare each night.

Eatonville Police Chief Joseph Jenkins confirmed Delgado's dismissal to ABC News but wouldn't provide details on why he was being let go.

"This town, as well as me, cares about people", Cole said.

Delgado returned to patrol duty around a month after the shooting, which left 49 dead and at least 68 injured, but realized that he was too traumatized from what he'd witnessed to continue. "It's a small town".

Delgado said the issue of PTSD needs to be taken more seriously and first responders should be covered and compensated.

'I never thought I would have gotten to this point. "I didn't think I was going to be treated this way".

Longo told Inside Edition that Delgado's pension will be fully vested next year, and the lawyer questions why the city is just now cutting ties with Delgado.

"Just let me get vested and I will be more than happy to pack up my troubles and leave", he told USA Today.

"They just need to have his back 100 percent with this", he said.
