Google Removes Chrome Apps From Web Store, Shifting To Progressive Web Apps

Google kills Chrome Apps by shutting down the Chrome Web Store section

This extension enables you to install, view, and modify the Chrome Remote Desktop native client from the web UI. "We will be removing support for packaged and hosted apps from Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux over the next two years". People who use Chrome just for web surfing will be able to download extensions and themes. Provide remote assistance to Windows, Mac and Linux users, or access your Windows and Mac desktops at any time, all from the Chrome browser on virtually any device, including Chromebooks. Google announced this via a blog post on 19th August 2016 and now have updated the blog post on 5th December 2017, making the change live from today. Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices, including kiosks.

Google on Wednesday made good on its promise to rid of Chrome Apps.

Now Google announced that users can no longer have access to the Web Store and cannot install the apps through the Chrome Web Store. "We have been investigating ways to simplify the transition for developers that depend on exclusive Chrome App APIs, and will continue to focus on this - in particular the Sockets, HID and Serial APIs". For more information on PWAs, you can visit the dedicated Google developers page here.

Well it is informed that Google will not immediately remove Chrome Apps support on Windows, Mac, and Linux in first quarter of 2018. When Google's done working on PWAs on Android, the company could move forward by bringing it to other versions of the Chrome web browser. They already work on Chrome for Android, so once Google is done here, PWAs would be the only Chrome app type to work across desktop and mobile.

This is the companion extension for the Chrome Remote Desktop website (https://remotedesktop.google.com). Microsoft already announced that it's bringing PWAs to Windows 10, while Apple is in early stages to bring it to the Safari web browser.
