A Judge Issues An Arrest Warrant For A Former Argentinian President

Cristina Kirchner was the Argentinian president from 2007 to 2015.

Kirchner, 64, held a press conference in Buenos Aires to hit back at charges from Judge Claudio Bonadio, who ordered her arrest for treason for allegedly covering up Iran's involvement in a deadly 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires.

Nisman, who was investigating the AMIA bombing, alleged Kirchner had covered up the role of Iranian officials in the attack.

The former president is accused of signing a deal with Tehran to allow Iranian officials suspected of ordering the attack on the Jewish centre to be interviewed by Argentine magistrates in Tehran rather than in Buenos Aires.

Judge Carlos Bonadio also ordered the arrest and detention of several other officials who served in Kirchner's two administrations, including former Foreign Minister Hector Timmerman, who was given house arrest due to his health, and former presidential secretary Carlos Zanini.

The order is the latest move to resolve a case that's gripped Argentina for years. For that to happen, two-thirds of the legislators must decide to remove Kirchner's immunity for an arrest.

Kirchner's leftist alliance in the Senate has a total of 32 seats, but only around a dozen senators are in the Kirchner camp.

Her political clout has since faded with the victory of center-right President Mauricio Macri in elections later that year, but the populist firebrand now seeks a comeback as leading the opposition against Mr. Macri.

The ex-head of the Federal Intelligence Agency, Oscar Parrilli, was ordered not to leave the country.

The charges largely stem from a case filed by special prosecutor Alberto Nisman, whose mysterious death from a gunshot wound - hours before he was set to testify before Congress in January 2015 - had rocked Argentina at the height of Ms. Fernandez's power. In October, congress voted to lift protection from her former planning minister, Julio De Vido, who was facing charges of fraud and corruption.
