Champions League draw: Chelsea face prospect of tough round-of-16 draw

Mbappe takes the record from fellow Frenchman Karim Benzema by nearly two years

The Galacticos haven't been at their best this season, but still remain the ultimate force to be reckoned with when it comes to the Champions League.

However, the easy paths each team took to the Round of 16 must be taken into account. Last year Basel earned all of two points in a Group A with Arsenal, PSG and Ludogorets Razgrad. The eight group runners-up will be unseeded.

Liverpool crushed Spartak Moscow on Wednesday. But the only other team in the group that was any good - Napoli - fell apart and never mounted much of a challenge, ultimately finishing in third place behind Shakhtar Donetsk.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid both progressed all the way through to the final that season with Zinedine Zidane's side triumphing on penalties, but Sevilla and Valencia crashed out in the groups.

Chelsea blew the opportunity to finish top of their group with a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, with the draw allowing Roma to leapfrog them to finish as Group C winners. Not only have they topped a group containing Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, they beat the latter 3-1 at Wembley in what will surely go down as one of their most famous outings in Europe. Everton, though, failed to reach the group stages, losing in controversial fashion to Villarreal in the third qualifying phase.

"For now it's time to focus on the Premier League, on the Carabao Cup and FA Cup that we will start in January, and when the Champions League is back in February we will see how we are". The same rings true for the five English Premier League clubs in the Champions League knockout round.

Chelsea found themselves with little alternatives as, at the moment, Psg, Besiktas and Barcelona are the only clubs that Antonio Conte's side can face in the last-16 stage.
