Ed Sheeran rules Spotify in 2017

Sheeran's album Divide was the most streamed album of the year worldwide with 3.1 billion streams.

"There is no doubt that 2017 was The Year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to, and shared his music", says Stefan Blom, Spotify's chief content officer.

(Streams of an album's singles, in aggregate, contribute to the album's total count.) "Shape Of You" have now surpassed Drake's 2016 hit "One Dance" as the most-streamed song in the platform's history, dethroning the Canadian rapper, who was atop the streaming services data in 2016.

"2017 was the year of Ed Sheeran", as he takes the title for most streamed artist worldwide.

Rihanna finished as the top-streamed female artist, followed by Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Sia. The number of streams of K-pop tracks within the K-pop Hub have grown by 63 per cent year on year, and Singapore holds the fifth position globally, with the most number of K-pop streams on Spotify.

Drake's "More Life", which he didn't submit for consideration at the upcoming Grammy Awards, is the second-most streamed album of the year. While Lorde and Adele also made their way into the Australian top five.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" remix, co-starring Justin Bieber, was the second-most streamed song of the year.

This year Spotify has also launched a personalised 2017 Wrapped feature to compare your individual taste with that of the nation.

And getting into the really granular details, two interesting tidbits: June 13, 2017 saw the most streams globally per user than any other day, and the year's top emerging genre was melodic power metal.

Check it out before the end of the year to find out what tunes have floated your boat this year.
