Liberia Supreme Court dismisses fraud allegations, upholds re-run of October polls

The court challenge had been raised by the Liberty Party, whose candidate Charles Brumskine had placed third.

Liberia's Supreme Court told the electoral commission to proceed with organizing the final round of presidential elections that was initially scheduled November 7 but put on hold to probe allegations of fraud during the first round. That means current Vice President Joseph Boakai and perennial challenger, former football star and current Senator George Weah will face each other in a national poll.

The date of the run - off will be determined and announced by the electoral commission which has been ordered by the Supreme Court to conduct critical reforms before the next election. Weah got 38 percent of votes in the first round on October 10, while Boakai came second with 29 percent of ballots cast.

The court was seized after the electoral commission dismissed the fraud allegations.

As a result the commission was prohibited from airing its views in public on "any matters which may grow out of the runoff election", Banks said.

The court in its opinion read by Justice Philip Banks, said the purported fraud and irregularities were not overwhelming enough to warrant a re-run as requested by the Liberty Party.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf steps down January 18th after serving two terms.

Battered by back-to-back civil wars between 1989 and 2003 and an Ebola crisis that killed thousands from 2014 to 2016, Liberia's presidential election is considered a crucial test of the west African nation's stability and would be the first democratic transition of power in seven decades.
