Two people, including a female priest, were killed and two others were wounded last night in a knife attack at a Tokyo shrine, police and news reports said.

Police officers walk near the scene of a stabbing incident at Tomioka Hachimangu shrine in Tokyo Friday, Dec. 8, 2017.

According to police, Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, who was accompanied by his girlfriend, aged in her 30s, used a Japanese sword to fatally slash the head and chest of Nagako Tomioka, 58, who is his sister and the chief priest of the shrine, after she exited a vehicle.

The male driver of the vehicle, 33, attempted to flee the scene.

The attack began around 8:25 p.m., when Shigenaga Tomioka attacked his sister with a Japanese sword as she exited her vehicle on the shrine grounds. At a spot about 100 meters away from the auto, she slashed his right shoulder, leaving him with a non-life-threatening injury. Japanese media said he is the victim's brother, but police would not confirm that. He then slashed his chest in taking his life, police said.

The assailant, identified as 56-year-old Shigenaga Tomioka, attacked his 58-year-old sister sister Nagako Tomioka, the shrine's chief priestess, with a Samurai sword and killed her after she got off from a chauffeur-driven auto.

The Tomioka Hachimangu shrine, established in 1627, is known for its Fukagawa Hachiman summer festival and its golden portable shrines. Two tournaments were held in the Spring and Autumn at the shrine each year as dictated by the shogunate.

The attacker was the chief priest of the shrine more than a decade ago, but was demoted from the post and succeeded by his sister.
