China Warns Its Citizens in Pakistan of Possible Terror Attacks Targeting Chinese

China warns nationals in Pak of imminent terror attacks

Following its decision to temporarily stop funding of at least three major rod projects being built under its $50 billion china-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Beijing has warned its nationals in Pakistan of series of imminent "terrorist attacks" on Chinese targets in the country.

Thousands of Chinese workers are now in Pakistan working on different projects under the $57 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor project.

Citing a statement by the embassy, South China Morning Post reported that the consulate had been informed that terrorists were planning "a series of attacks soon" against Chinese.

The statement asked Chinese nationals to cooperate with police and the military in Pakistan and alert the embassy in the event of an emergency.

Pakistan's foreign ministry could not be reached immediately for comment.

The security of the Chinese officials in Pakistan is a major issue and army has been assigned to provide security to Chinese working on various projects, including CPEC. More than 9,000 of them are working under CPEC, which has been declared the flagship project of Beijing's "Road and Belt Initiative".

President Xi Jinping's signature programme, the "Belt and Road" development plan aims to link China with the Middle East and Europe. Retired Lt. Gen. Talat Masood said that Pakistan is now on high alert because of the people demonstrating against Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Masood said Chinese security concerns are valid and Pakistan needs to take care of them. He added that they want to "create hurdles, and this is one way of doing that". The letter also urged Pakistani authorities to beef up security of Chinese companies and nationals.

For decades, a small number of Uighurs, an ethnic minority in western China that has chafed under Beijing's rule, have sought refuge with the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Islamic State group in June claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of two Chinese teachers in Quetta.
