Shubhankar Sharma qualifies for The Open with Joburg Open win

Shubhankar made to wait by weather

Shubhankar Sharma held his nerve to sign for a closing 69 and win a first European Tour title at the weather-delayed Joburg Open. The Indian, who on Saturday became the first player to be 20 under or better after 54 holes on the Tour since Rory McIlroy at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2015, led by five strokes going into the finale.

Sharma birded two of his first seven holes to reach 22 under, and was on the eighth green when risky weather forced suspension of play. With 11 holes remaining in the final round, played on Monday after rain curtailed play on Sunday, Sharma carried a five-shot lead over South African Erik van Rooyen.

Finland's Tapio Pulkkanen and England's James Morrison were both at 14-under-par with more than nine holes to play in their rounds and didn't appear as if they were going to challenge Sharma. The Asian Tour player has five victories on the PGA Tour of India, so he's used to the pressure of trying to close out a tournament. "I actually wasn't going to come here about a week ago and I chose to come so I'm really happy that I came".

"I had to cancel my flight tickets today but that was an easy thing to do considering the position I'm in".

Van Rooyen had made birdies on the third, fourth, fifth and seventh, and was left with a tap-in on the ninth overnight, which he made to get to 19-under.

Three Open Championship spots, for next year's tournament to be played at Carnoustie, are up for grabs this week, meaning every drive, approach and putt will be crucial for the chasing pack, as Sharma and Van Rooyen look to have sewn up two of those three places.

The 2017 Road to Oman victor put an approach to six feet on the 16th to make it three in a row but he would still need to pick up another shot, with Norris in pole position to go to Carnoustie on the virtue of his higher World Ranking.
