Shohei Ohtani reportedly has injured ligament in pitching elbow

Angels manager Scioscia has no concerns about Ohtani's elbow

According to Yahoo!'s Jeff Passan, Ohtani has a first-degree sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The PRP shot, in which centrifuge-spun blood is returned to the body to promote healing, was performed October 20, according to Yahoo. The UCL is the ligament that requires Tommy John surgery to fix, a procedure that often keeps pitchers out of baseball for more than a year. While that is a the least-severe UCL injury, if things get worse he could require surgery. Ohtani's agent Nez Balelo told Sports Illustrated that the shot was a "preventative measure" aimed at protecting the arm.

"Although partial damage of UCL in deep layer of his right UCL exists", the report said, " ... he is able to continue full baseball participation with sufficient elbow care program".

The fact that the injury is to Ohtani's pitching elbow is the real cause for consternation, though the report obtained by Yahoo Sports suggested that he could begin throwing in November and might not need further treatment.

Ohtani also has a "small free body" in his elbow near the ligament. Those are scans we conduct whenever we sign a pitcher.

Ohtani, a 23-year-old who is both a right-handed pitcher and left-handed slugger with impeccable credentials in Japan in both disciplines, was posted by his Japanese team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, earlier this month, and after a thorough vetting process, last week chose to sign with the Angels. It looks consistent with players his age. It is particularly troublesome for Ohtani because of a strong correlation between fastball velocity and elbow injuries.

According to the physical, Ohtani also received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) shot in his elbow on October 20. Ohtani, whose fastball has reached 102 miles per hour, threw only 25 1/3 innings for the Fighters this season after missing most of the year with a strained hamstring.
