Israel hits Gaza after rocket fire; 3 injured

"In response to the rocket fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel earlier today, the IAF targeted a Hamas military compound in the southern Gaza Strip", said the IDF Spokesperson Unit.

The previous such announcement was on October 30, when Israel blew up a tunnel dug by Islamic Jihad.

On Monday night, the Israeli military said it hit Hamas positions after intercepting rockets coming from the blockaded enclave.

Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas missed a major deadline in their reconciliation bid by failing to transfer power in the Gaza Strip.

It also fired missiles, which detonated in an open area, just east of the targeted site. Iron Dome air defense system intercepted the missile, and no one was hurt.

Israel allows goods to be brought into and out of Gaza on a daily basis, under heavy supervision, through the Kerem Shalom Crossing. Egypt, meanwhile, operates the Rafah Crossing into Sinai, but only opens it occasionally.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fire and other attacks emanating from the Strip, which the terror group still overwhelmingly controls despite handing over some power back to the Palestinian Authority.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 1,300 people have been injured by Israeli fire since the beginning of unrest in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, following US President Donald Trump's decision last week to recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since seizing it in 2007 in a near civil war with Fatah, leaving Palestinians with two separate administrations. They insist that Jerusalem is the single and indivisible capital of Israel.
