Rising Arctic temperatures are breaking records, altering USA weather, even confusing computers

The annual update on how the Arctic is faring environmentally, released December 12 by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says you have to look back more than 1,500 years-"and likely longer than that"-to find such a rapid and large-scale mix of sea ice decline and warming temperatures in the Arctic".

A new United States government report released on Tuesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reveals that the Arctic seawater is warming and the permafrost is thawing at the fastest rate in 1,500 years.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, where the report was released, he said, "These changes will impact all of our lives".

Arctic Report Card concludes there is no sign of a return of widespread sea ice in the southern region.

"'There are many strong signals that continue to indicate the Arctic environmental system has reached a 'new normal".

Historical data show the current observed rate of sea ice decline and warming temperatures are higher than at any other time in at least the past 1,500 years and likely much longer. And those dramatic changes coincide with the large increase in carbon dioxide levels in the air from the burning of oil, gas and coal, the report said. "This year's Arctic Report Card is a powerful argument for why we need long-term sustained Arctic observations to support the decisions that we will need to make to improve the economic well-being for Arctic communities, national security, environmental health and food security".

2017 was the second warmest year in the Arctic since 1900, when instrumental recordkeeping began. It was 2.9 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 Celsius) above the average for the period of 1981 to 2010.

From 2017 Climate Science annual report, Maximum Arctic sea-ice extent on record. "With less and less sea ice to reflect sunlight, the temperature around the North Pole is speeding upward". Above-average ocean temperature, with sea surface temperatures in August 2017 in the Barents and Chukchi seas up to 4 degrees Celsius warmer than average. Research also shows changes in Arctic sea ice and temperature can alter the jet stream, which is a major factor in US weather. The biggest increases are occurring on the North Slope of Alaska, Canada's tundra and Siberia's Taimyr Peninsula.

The generally gloomy findings from the Arctic Report Card for September show that despite much cooler than average spring and summer weather across the region, summer sea ice continues to dwindle, and ice melt from the Greenland ice sheet is continuing, albeit at a slower rate.

Permafrost in the Arctic is thawing at a faster clip, according to a new report released Tuesday.
