Adam Rippon Makes History; Becomes First Openly Gay US Olympic Skater

5 Must See Holiday Light Displays in LA

While we're super proud of figure skater Adam Rippon for becoming the first openly gay U.S. athlete to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, everyone's salivating over the recent pic of the U.S. Men's Bobsled team looking all hunky in their skintight uniforms - and can yow!

The other selections for the American team include Nathan Chen, who won the US title in 2018 and 2017, and Vincent Zhou, who came in third at nationals.

Rippon, who was the United States national champion in 2016, will be making his Olympic debut.

"Growing up, I really didn't have a lot of role models".

The 28-year-old told reporters: "I'm really grateful that the selection committee looked at my body of work over the last two seasons. And I want somebody who's young, who's struggling, who's not sure if it's OK if they are themselves to know that it's OK", he said.

An openly gay man from the U.S. has never competed in the Winter Olympics. Weir competed at the games in 2006 and 2010, and came out in his book Welcome to My World in 2011.

Will other gay athletes join him?

Rippon did not compete for the USA title in 2017 thanks to an injury, but has had a strong season this year. He will find out later this month. However, a sled malfunction cut his chances and he finished in 21st in the qualifying heats. I was just a little gay kid in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania. So many more athletes are willing to be open, and it's part of the culture now to be more open about who you are and what your interests are. You can't be afraid of who you are or else you're afraid of your own potential, and if you don't own who you are then you can't grow. "I have always tried to be my authentic self and sharing my story has always been really important". When everyone knew, I didn't feel like I was hiding anything. "I was able to perform and genuinely show the judges and the audience who I was". It was a lot easier to be me than to be who I thought I was supposed to be'.

Rippon will be the first openly gay male athlete to represent the U.S.at the Winter Olympics.

"A few years ago, I made the decision to come out publicly as gay - spoiler alert", Rippon told U.S. Figure Skating in a promotional video.

"I am so excited to be on this Olympic team", Rippon said in a statement to The Advocate.
